Michele Bachmann Requests that North Korea be 'Relisted as a State Sponsor of Terrorism'

Rep. Michele Bachmann (R-Minn.) recently sent a letter to Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, asking that North Korea be relisted as a state sponsor of terrorism. What do you think of her request?

Last week Congresswoman Michele Bachmann (R-Minn.) sent a letter to Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, asking that North Korea be relisted as a state sponsor of terrorism.

Bachmann’s request comes in light of North Korea’s “well documented list of provocative actions against other countries, the recent failed rocket launch as well as rumors that a nuclear test is imminent.”

The text of Bachmann’s letter Hillary Clinton is below.

What do you think of Bachmann’s letter?

Do you think the failed rocket launch attempt will put pressure on North Korea to “take even more aggressive action” like testing a nuclear weapon or launching a military attack?

Do you think North Korea should be relisted as a state sponsor of terrorism?

Do you think the label would cause more issues?

Dear Secretary Clinton:

The recent attempt by the Democratic People’s Republic of North Korea to launch an Unha-3 rocket into orbit presents an opportunity and obligation for the United States to make a statement that it will not tolerate such provocative actions.

The failure of the North Korea rocket launch will put pressure on their leadership to take even more aggressive action, such as testing a nuclear weapon or another military attack.

For this reason, I urge the administration to send a message to the international community by relisting North Korea as a state sponsor of terrorism as soon as possible.

Currently, the State Department has designated four countries as state sponsors of terrorism: Syria, Cuba, Sudan, and Iran, with North Korea being delisted in October 2008.

Since that time, it seems that North Korea has done little to earn the distinction of a country that intends to peacefully reintegrate itself into the international community.

North Korea has clearly provided support for acts of international terrorism and pursuant to section 6(j) of the Export Administration Act, section 40 of the Arms Export Control Act, and section 620A of the Foreign Assistance Act, should be relisted as a state sponsor of terrorism. U.S. code defines international terrorism as activities that:

1) Involve violent acts or acts dangerous to human life that are a violation of the criminal laws of the United States or of any State, or that would be a criminal violation if committed within the jurisdiction of the United States or of any State;

2) Intimidate or coerce a civilian population;

3) Influence the policy of a government by intimidation or coercion.

Since being delisted as a state sponsor of terrorism, North Korea sunk the South Korean Patrol ship Cheonan killing 46 sailors, attempted to assassinate high-level defector Hwang Jang-Yop who was residing in South Korea, attempted to provide Hamas and Hezbollah with rockets and rocket propelled grenades, fired artillery rounds at the South Korean island of Yeonpyeong killing two Marines and two civilians, and collaborated with Iran on weapons programs.

In addition, just prior to being delisted, North Korea assisted Syria in building a nuclear reactor according to the United States intelligence community.

Furthermore, it seems that Kim Jong Un, the newly bestowed leader of North Korea, has no intention of working with the United States.

For example, in February 2012, it was announced that North Korea would suspend operations at its Yongbyon uranium enrichment plant and potentially place moratoriums on nuclear testing in exchange for 240,000 metric tons of food from the United States.

However, less than a month later, North Korea announced the launch of a new rocket thereby negating any agreement between our two countries.

On Friday April 13, 2012, the Obama administration compared its policies towards North Korea with that of the Bush administrations.

White House spokesman Ben Rhodes said “Under the previous administration, for instance, there was a substantial amount of assistance provided to North Korea. North Korea was removed from the terrorism list, even as they continued to engage in provocative actions.”

I agree with the Obama administration’s assessment that it was a mistake to remove North Korea despite their provocative actions.  However, it is now in your hands to condemn this action, fix a previous administration’s mistake, and declare North Korea in no uncertain terms as a state sponsor of terrorism.

Doesn't the State Department have internal analysts and a process for putting a country on the "state sponsored terrorism" list? Or do they always depend on letters from Congressional reps from backwater districts to tell them what to do? Were Bachmann's constituents hounding her on this issue, so she needed to take this action?

Or, maybe she's just trying to get more headlines for herself ahead of the election?? If so, it looks like the Patch is playing into her hand very nicely.

I agree .little concern, when I see her getting a lot of free press , and having her picture everywhere . Does she pick issues out off a hat each week, to keep her face in the press?

Guys, is there anything "wrong" with her letter? Pretty much every legislator get's free press, and being on the House Intelligence Committee doesn't hurt. Would you be spouting your "little concern" theory if this was any other legislator? Patch is falling into nobody's hand, they're reporting the news, same as Star Trib, CBS, KSTP and others are. Guess she really has the media fooled, huh?

"Would you be spouting your "little concern" theory if this was any other legislator?"

Other legislators don't pull these kinds of publicity stunts.

Michelle should stick to building bridges over lakes, along with Franken and Klobachar.

Our President Obama is doing a fine job of dealing with terrorists.

Really? Let's see how Obama does when South Korea has been reduced to ashes in 4 minutes, huh?

Michelle is spot on. Unfortunately, this GOP run Patch has to show an unflattering photo of Michelle and negative lead into the story. Shame on the patch. But, you are living up to our expectations and just confirming you are not a non-political site.

I read the patch because it is too funny!

Yes, I'm sure Shawn is a puppet for Bachmann. Negative lead into the story? The lead states a fact, then asks for reader's opinions? If anyone has a bent here, Taxpayer, it's certainly not the Patch.

Media posting, printing and TV reporting her latest stance is fine, but ...
I would prefer more reporting on what she has actually accomplished in Congress.I know she has authored bills that not a single lawmaker will cosponsor, she's sponsored the exact same failing bills over and over again, entered bills on obscure or trivial topics. As of July 2011, of the 46 sponsored bills to her name, only two have actually passed the US House. Good reporting would be publishing her accomplishments ( or lack of) with her picture; in addition to her "issue of the week".

You should blog about it then. The Patch forum allows you to do such. Post a blog for everyone to read your thoughts. I'm being serious here. I personally agree that Bachmann is a complete loon and wouldn't vote for her if she were the only candidate. My only point above is that the story is a story and I actually agree with her on the North Korea issue.

I'd welcome hearing all of what you mentioned and more in a nice concise article about her record - I say go for it Sade!

Bethany R. I'm joking. Everyone knows this publication is owned by the DFL! I so enjoy reading in the evening. After all, during the day I'm at work, trying to earn a living so that the DFL run government can tax me to death. All the responses during the day are either union members, retired employees, public welfare recipients or Acorn off shoots that are being paid from taxpayer funds. But as I mentioned earlier, after the taxpayers no longer pay taxes, then what? The only way our government can survive is to stop funding. There is still hope!

Owned by the DFL? GOP? Come on, Actual Taxpayer.
I simply posted a letter written by the Sixth District Congresswoman and asked her constituents what they thought about it.
I led with fact, followed with why she wrote the letter and then posted it in its entirety. I asked a few questions to get a local conversation started.
This comment thread is open to anyone who wishes to weigh in (and I'm glad you chose to state your opinion, thank you).
Unless a comment violates our rules, it is published.
As Bethany points out, we also have an open blogging platform for people to express their voice. I encourage users to participate in that forum if they so choose. To Sade's point, here's a post from PolitiFact talking about Rep. Bachmann's legislative record. http://www.politifact.com/truth-o-meter/statements/2011/jul/28/tim-pawlenty/tim-pawlenty-said-michele-bachmanns-legislative-re/
I do my best to be straight with users of Stillwater Patch. If something I post is unfair, I appreciate people calling me on it. That's never my intent.

Patch does lean left, note the Bachmann story on terrorists with a wierd non-complimentary photo of Bachmann. GOP stories are published but ALWAYS with a down connotation.

Socialism is where many live off the labor of others BUT fails when the workers stop working. Are we headed in that direction?

Mr Actual taxpayer,
I would appreciate you listing the source on which you obtained the demographic stats on who comment "during the day". Not everyone has to leave their home, to be successful and pay taxes too.
Actual Taxpayer too, and happy to share with those in need .

I agree, I would also like to know where Mr. Actual gets his info. I own a business, often work at home, or stay in touch with my smart phone. Which category would Mr. Actual put me in?

We are all sick and tired of Bachmann's lies, delusions, and megalomania. It is up to the good people of Minnesota to vote this fascist witch out of Congress, and save us all from two mores years of embarrassment!

If what she wrote to Secretary Clinton is true, then it seems as though Rep. Bachmann has a point....here's my problem - I have a very hard time believing anything she writes or says! I have heard her speak on different issues (some of which I have spent hours researching), and have found that she has a incredible talent for skewing the truth and/or speaking half truths. It is for this reason that I must put all her words, spoken or written, into the "absurd" category.

^^This. She's no longer credible on the real, serious issues, even when she stops the lies and gaffes, because her history has shown her to be unreliable and not trustworthy.

She's the gift that keeps on giving for the Democrats:
