The pedestrians who were struck by a car while crossing Radio Drive on Monday are still recovering.

The trio was “literally run over,” according to City Administrator Clint Gridley, who gave the Woodbury City Council an update of the incident during its Wednesday night workshop.

A 28-year-old Oakdale woman, Latoya Patterson, and her two children were heading toward Central Park when a motorist taking a left and heading south onto Radio Drive ran them over. The incident happened in front of the city's Public Safety Department.

The 1-year-old is suffering from head trauma, Gridley said, and a Gillette Children’s Hospital spokesperson said the child is in fair condition. The 4-year-old is also in fair condition. The mother is in good condition but has not been discharged, according to a Regions Hospital official.

“Our thoughts and prayers go out to the family,” Councilman Christopher Burns said.

Gridley said the driver, an 8o-year-old from Woodbury, Joan Olson, had recently been to the eye doctor and her vision may have been impaired.

Woodbury Police Cmdr. Jay Alberio said the woman may be cited for failure to yield to a pedestrian in a crosswalk.

This is extremely unfortunate, but not surprising. I walk and run in Woodbury all the time and find that Woodbury drivers are extremely unaware when it comes to pedestrians and crosswalks. I have had many close calls with drivers making turns on green lights while I have a walk signal. If we push the button to get a walk signal drivers should not be given a green light for turning it is just too dangerous. Woodbury has wonderful walking paths, but drivers need to be much more aware so we can feel safe as pedestrians.

I live in the city and I love the area but NOT the drivers. One time I was trying to cross the street with my baby and 2 year old in the stroller and the drivers paid no attention to me whatsoever. I even got a look from a driver almost telling me that I better not cross the street. The crosswalks by the mall areas have the yield signs for pedestrians and drivers almost never yield. I guess it's state law for drivers to yield to pedestrians but Woodbury drivers apparently are on their own "law". I hope the city does something to help improve pedestrian safety.

Yeah, it's tough on those county highways too. You hear this a lot around the discussions about the Woodbury Drive expansion. Pedestrian safety has been a big issue there.

@Crystal Does the lack of sidewalks in Woodbury have anything to do with that?
