First responders were called to a report of a person down in a pool of blood on Highlands Trail North and 59th Street North.
The call came in at about 12:06 p.m. Wednesday, according to the Washington County Sheriff's Office. Lake Elmo firefighters have blocked off Highlands Trail North at Highway 36.
At the scene, a woman's body could be seen lying next to a vehicle. The Washington County Sheriff's Office confirmed there was a fatality.
"We're treating this as an apparent suicide," said Commander Cheri Dexter of the Washington County Sheriff's Office.
A nanny in the area told Patch that the child she was tending to heard a "pop" and then sirens soon after. Another neighbor said it's a quiet neighborhood other than traffic from nearby Highway 36.
"During the subsequent investigation it appears that an adult female died of a single gunshot wound to the head," Commander Brian Mueller stated in a news release. "The Sheriff's Office is not looking for any other individuals in connection with this case and there does not appear to be any related risk to the public."
The name of the woman is being withheld pending notification of next of kin.
