UPDATED: Stillwater Now in the Fourth Congressional District, Bachmann to Seek Re-election in the Sixth District

Redistricting maps put Rep. Betty McCollum (D-Minn.) and Rep. Michele Bachmann (R-Minn.) in the same district, but Bachmann's office said today that she plans on seeking re-election in the Sixth Congressional District.

New maps for Minnesota’s congressional and legislative districts were released Tuesday, putting Stillwater in the Fourth Congressional District.

The redistricting maps put Rep. Betty McCollum (D-Minn.) and Rep. Michele Bachmann (R-Minn.) in the same district, but Bachmann's office said Tuesday that she plans on seeking re-election in the Sixth Congressional District.

"I'll continue my service to the people in the district where I essentially went to junior high, high school, college, had my babies born and we built our business and we have our church and our family," Bachmann told the Star Tribune.

In a statement, Betty McCollum announced that she plans on running for re-election in the new 4th District.

"And I’m running to win," McCollum said. "This new district is a gateway into the Twin Cities that I would be proud to represent in Congress. With Congresswoman Michele Bachmann’s announcement that she will be moving, I don’t yet know who my opponent will be.

"What I do know is that I will be running on my record and with a commitment to keep fighting for the families of Ramsey and Washington counties."

For the residents of Woodbury, Stillwater and all new Fourth District voters, McCollum said she looks forward to working hard to earn support in the upcoming months.

"Today, the congressional map may have changed, but my values haven’t," McCollum said. "I will continue working for a strong economy, good jobs, quality schools, a clean environment and smart investments in transportation infrastructure."

When asked what seeking re-election in the Sixth District means for Bachmann's dedication to the St. Croix River Crossing Project, her spokesperson said: "She remains deeply committed to the St. Croix River Crossing. It is a top priority."

The new district maps are posted on the Geographic Information Services website. All of the documents that have been submitted to the court so far, including the three sets of maps, are also available on the Minnesota Special Redistricting Panel website.

MinnPost has some great background about redistricting in this post along with a map of the three proposed plans.

Washington County's growth over the past 10 years means it stands a good chance of gaining legislative seats.

The ideal state House and Senate districts would have 39,582 and 79,163 residents, respectively, according to a report in the Pioneer Press. The eight congressional districts must grow or shrink to reach the ideal population of 662,991 residents.

The Sixth Congressional District, currently represented by Michele Bachmann (R-Minn.), has the largest population and must drop 96,487 residents to meet the ideal standard, the Pioneer Press reports. While the Fourth Congressional District, currently represented by Betty McCollum (D-Minn.), is the smallest and needs to add 48,367 people.
