Tune in to Minnesota Public Radio today, Jan. 8, to hear a performance by Stillwater Area High School’s Concert Orchestra.

Classical MPR 99.5 FM will air a portion of the 2012 Concerto Concert—Madrigale by Karl Bohm—at 11 a.m. and 7:15 p.m.

MPR will be featuring quality musical ensembles from across the state as part of its Classical music programming. The goal is to honor outstanding high school, college and community ensembles while providing listeners with great music. Stillwater Area High School is kicking off this initiative with their performance.

“The recordings are vetted by our staff, and the chosen ensembles are contacted in advance of the scheduled airtime, so that they and their community can tune in to hear the performance,” according to MPR. “Our goal is to honor these groups, while giving our listeners a broad and varied representation of the great music that is being made in our schools and communities.”

Two Groups From Stillwater High Invited to Perform at Carnegie Hall

The Stillwater High School orchestra program started in 1918.

In 1925, the Stillwater High School Orchestra was comprised of six violins, one piano, one xylophone, one banjo, two cornets, and one drummer, according to MPR. Today, the highly-acclaimed orchestra program starts in 5th grade in 10 of the district’s elementary schools; has three orchestras in Stillwater and Oak-Land junior high schools, and four orchestras at the high school.

There are nearly 1,000 students studying string instruments in the district.
