Stillwater Area High School Receives AFS Top School Award

Stillwater, MN February 28th, 2014 — Stillwater Area High School has been selected to receive the “2014 Top AFS School” Award from AFS-USA, an educational leader in international high school student exchange. Schools recognized for this award have partnered with the organization to promote global citizenship through intercultural learning — both inside and outside of the classroom. These schools are committed to preparing our youth to engage in an increasingly interconnected global economy. From hosting international students, sending students abroad to working with the organization to incorporate intercultural learning in the curriculum, these educators demonstrate the importance of fostering global competency in their students. You can view the entire list of Top Schools at www.afsusa.org/educators.

During the February 27th Stillwater School Board Meeting the four AFS students currently attending Stillwater Area High School presented the Board and High School with the 2014 AFS Top Schools Award.

The 79 high schools selected from around the country for this public recognition are making a profound difference in the lives of students and in society at large. The ability to speak another language, to navigate in a different cultural context, and to emerge as a more tolerant and globally informed citizen are critical skills for today’s youth.

Over the years, Stillwater has hosted 30 AFS students from 20 countries. “We’re so thankful and proud to work in educational partnership with schools like Stillwater Area High School said Tonya Muro, the Director of School Outreach and Educational Partnerships at AFS-USA. “These educators are at the forefront of bringing global awareness and intercultural experiences to their students. In doing so, they are providing students, teachers and the greater community profound opportunities to broaden their knowledge of other cultures and peoples, which is indispensable in this day and age.”

Please join us in congratulating Stillwater for all they have done in the realm of international education and global learning.
