A Trip Back in Time: The Louis Albenberg Millinery in Stillwater

A look at Stillwater's storied past.

This photograph, from the Louis Albenberg Millinery in Stillwater, shows women making hats.

Louis Albenberg came to Stillwater in 1871 and worked for his father as a cigar peddler for about five years. With his experience in sales, Albenberg opened The New York Clothing Emporium.

When business increased in the 1890s, Albenberg hired more clerks and became the city’s largest clothing dealer. When Albenberg moved to Superior, Wisconsin, a man named Jacob Kolliner bought the business and changed the name to Kolliner’s.
