The shop will employ 12-15 people, depending on the season, CherryBerry spokesperson Jody Jordan said. The Oklahoma-based frozen yogurt shop chose to expand into downtown Stillwater because of "the atmosphere.”

“We offer a healthy snack with a unique experience to our local people as well as the many people who visit our great community,” Jordan said. “You choose what kind, how much and what toppings. It’s a great place to come and enjoy a treat with your family.”

‘Healthy’ Competition

With frozen treats holding down three of the four corners of the downtown intersection, the reaction from and is: Competition is good.

“The competition makes us better,” Cory Buettner, owner of Leo’s said. “It makes us have a broader range of offerings for our customers.”

When Dairy Queen opened across the street three years ago, Leo’s reaction to the Blizzard was to add cookies, candy and fruit options to the menu for customers to blend into their malt.

Now, Leo’s is offering frozen yogurt that can be blended with a variety of toppings.

Dairy Queen opened three years ago this month on the northwest corner of Main and Chestnut streets. On Tuesday, the store's Dirctor of Operations, Bill Kulesa, said Stillwater Dairy Queen plans on taking the wait-and-see approach to CherryBerry’s arrival.

“We’re an infant in an old building,” Kulesa said. “If we do a good job and take care of our customers, we’ll be fine. As far as I’m concerned the more the merrier—if someone wants to throw their hat in the ring, more power to them.”

Kulesa said there aren't any plans to change Stillwater Dairy Queen's menu. The franchise will continue holding fundraisers for local athletics, give 15 percent-off discounts to teams and kids wearing their uniforms and have on Thursday, July 26.

“We’re well entrenched in Stillwater,” Kulesa said. “Greg Gartner does a lot of good work in Stillwater, he was a big part of the bridge project and employs a lot of people in the area.”

Those four frozen options are in addition to located just up the hill from downtown; and Luna Rosa's gelato shop to the south.
