Gun Center Aims for 2014 Opening at Ex-Hecker Site

Oak Park Heights has given the green light to the former car dealership property becoming home to indoor shooting range and sporting retail store, according to media reports.

The former Denny Hecker car dealership at Hwy. 36 and Stillwater Boulevard in Oak Park Heights will be transformed into a facility including an indoor gun range, a sporting goods retail store and more, according to news reports.

The Oak Park Heights city council approved plans Oct. 22 for Minnesota Outdoor Shooting Sports to open two gun ranges along with a gym, lounge, retail store and cafe, according to the Stillwater Gazette—a 56,000 square foot facility called Minnesota Shooting Academy.

Lower property taxes from the vacant site "is hurting everybody: the school district, the county the state, local fire protection, police protection," Oak Park Heights City Councilman Mark Swenson told KSTP-TV. The site is about a quarter-mile from Stillwater Area High School, KSTP reported.
