Deer Population Abundant in Lake Elmo

The City of Lake Elmo will be participating in a hunt to mitigate the deer population in the City. Eight hunters will be chosen through a resident lottery to participate in the hunt.

We, at the City of Lake Elmo, have been receiving a high volume of resident complaints about deer damage to their trees, plants and shrubs. To remedy this, we'll be participating in a mitigation hunt with Washington County on November 9th and 10th, with the county continuing the hunt the following weekend. We are also offering the opportunity to eight lucky hunters in Lake Elmo to join in the hunt!

Results of a recent flyover conducted by MnDOT, both Lake Elmo Park Reserve and Sunfish Lake Park are exhibiting a deer count of 43 per square mile. A normal range is between 15 to 25 deer per square mile.

Notices announcing the hunt will be posted on park property two weeks in advance, and the parks will be closed to the public during the hunt. This will be a shotgun only hunt.

Those interested in participating in the hunt should apply at City Hall. Applicants must be residents of Lake Elmo, be hunter safety certified, and present both proof of address and a valid hunting license to be considered. Eight hunters will be selected at random, and will be required to attend a special training session one week prior to the hunt.
