2.08 Mile Loop
This is a quick 2+ mile loop that has some busy road noise and some nature. Park at Rutherford Elementary School and head out to Myrtle (hwy 12) and turn right (East). Take the right turn onto Northland Avenue (at the tennis courts) and another right at the T to continue on Northland. Take a right on Interlachen which is mostly dirt. When the dirt road ends, go left at the stop sign onto Rutherford Road. Just keep following Rutherford back to the school.
I avoid this path when it is really hot and dry (especially during the busy commuter times of day) I end up eating a lot of dust on the dirt road When the cars pass otherwise. Myrtle is also really noisy during the busy times of the day. There are bright spots: The peaceful lake that can be seen from Myrtle, Long Lake, and lots of beautiful gardens. My favorite garden is on the corner of Northland and Interlachen. If I see someone outside of any home with a garden, I always tell them that I appreciate the efforts that they have made to cultivate beautiful plants and flowers. I want them to know that they are bringing people joy!
The walk takes about 30 minutes, and this morning, I was rewarded by catching a close up glimpse of an egret flying low over one of the green ponds. The reflection on the water was breath-taking! I heard a commotion- (Squaaaak!) and discovered that the egret had landed too close to a blue heron who had already claimed territory near by. The blue heron would have none of it, and sent the egret flying to a different shoreline. It's not my favorite loop, but there is beauty everywhere, and it is sure and easy trek.
