In high school, he was a member of every musical ensemble that featured a trombone. During the summers, he attended music camps at the Shell Lake Arts Center in Shell Lake, Wis. He was so inspired by his experiences as a camper that he became a camp counselor after high school, leading other young people on their musical journeys. His ability to relate to young people was also apparent during two trips to Poland through UNESCO, during which he helped high school students practice their English and learn about American culture.

Ross was attending the University of Wisconsin, Eau Claire, majoring in computer science.
