Car Chase Suspect to Police: Running From the Law Was 'Dumbest Thing' Ever

A 23-year-old New Hope man allegedly led police on a 25-mile chase that ended in Oak Park Heights this week, initially claiming the accelerator on his new vehicle was stuck, and putting the car in reverse, sent the vehicle forward.

A 23-year-old New Hope man led Roseville police on a 25-mile chase that ended in Oak Park Heights this week—and then claimed the accelerator on his new vehicle was stuck.

But the excuse Andrew Samuel Kamin gave for leading officers on a high-speed chase was a ruse, according to court records, and after being questioned by police the man eventually admitted he made that story up mid-chase.

Kamin told police that he was showing his girlfriend the new car he had bought just days earlier in Wisconsin. After his arrest, Kamin initially told police that the accelerator was stuck and he couldn’t get it out of fifth gear.

Kamin went on to tell police that when he hit the brakes on his turbo car it caused him to go faster—and putting the vehicle in reverse sent him forward.

But Kamin’s girlfriend—who was in the vehicle at the time of the chase—had another story to tell.

She told police that she wanted out of the vehicle.

The woman told police that Kamin saw the officer and intended to flee, the complaint states. In the midst of the chase, Kamin reportedly told his girlfriend to call 911 and say the accelerator was stuck.

After being confronted with his girlfriend’s version of the events, Kamin allegedly admitted that he tried to flee police.

Kamin told police fleeing the officer “was the dumbest thing he had ever done,” the complaint states. He also told police his girlfriend wanted to get out of the car during the chase.

Here’s what happened during the incident, according to the criminal complaint:

Roseville police were called to the area of Highway 36 and 35W during the early-morning hours of Oct. 21 for the report of someone driving the wrong way down the highway.

An officer responded to the area and saw a 1995 Eagle Talon traveling northbound at a high rate of speed traveling on 35W. The officer estimated the car was going over 90 miles per hour.

The officer caught up with the car at I-35W and Stinson Boulevard, where the squad was 200 feet behind the Talon and the officer paced the car at 120 mph.

The officer activated his emergency lights as the Talon left I-35W to go east on Highway 36, when the Talon sped up and weaved in and out of traffic.

The Talon’s brake lights went on repeatedly and the car slowed down to 90 mph as the driver and passenger both waved their arms out of the car as if they were in distress.

That’s when the passenger called 911 and told dispatch that the accelerator was stuck, the complaint states. The car drove all the way through Ramsey County into Washington County where officers deployed stop sticks in Oak Park Heights causing the car’s two front tires to go flat.

The Talon kept going until officers used a PIT maneuver to bring the chase to an end.

Kamin was charged with fleeing police in a motor vehicle.
