Stillwater Man Arrested on Suspicion of Burglary

After police responded to a report of a suspicious man lurking around a home in the 700 block of 6th Avenue, officers found who they believe to be a burglar with stolen jewelry on his person.

A 19-year-old Stillwater man was arrested Tuesday afternoon on suspicion of second-degree burglary and theft charges.

Police were called to the 700 block of 6th Avenue South for a report of a suspicious man lurking around a home and looking into windows.

Police located the 19-year-old man who matched a description of the “lurker” who denied walking around a home, the report states. But the officer noticed that the man also appeared to be fidgety and nervous.

The officer asked the man to empty his pockets for a pat search, the suspected burglary hesitated, and eventually pulled what police believed to be women’s jewelry from his pockets, the report states.

The man told police it was his girlfriend’s jewelry, but couldn’t explain why he had it, the report states. Police also allegedly located cash and drug paraphernalia.

A homeowner was then called and asked to verify that the jewelry belonged to her. She stated that all the jewelry belonged to her and was valued at about $2,640, the report states.

The 19-year-old man is currently in custody at the Washington County jail. Formal charges are expected to be filed this morning by the Washington County Attorney’s Office.
