Stillwater Police Blotter: Rescued Ducklings, Main Street Crash and Burglary Games

Stillwater police also responded to reports of DWI, theft and a Porta Potty delivery gone wrong.

Three Stillwater community service officers and two firefighters rescued five ducklings from a sewer drain on Second Street North near Linden Street Thursday afternoon (June 2). This was the first time this spring police and fire were called to rescue ducks from the sewers.

A 16-year-old Maplewood boy may have been drunk when his minivan hit a light pole Thursday morning (June 2) near Main and Nelson streets in downtown Stillwater, according to the Minnesota State Patrol. The teen was transported to St. John’s Hospital in Maplewood. Troopers believe alcohol may have played a role in the crash.

A 19-year-old man was arrested by Stillwater Police Saturday playing the video games he was suspected of stealing. Police were looking into the 19-year-old suspect after three residential burglaries were reported— one in the 2300 block of Walnut Creek Drive on April 1; a second in the 900 block of South Fifth Street on May 15; and a third in the 1100 block of Curve Crest Boulevard on May 24, according to police. Police believe Anderson stole two Play Station 3 consoles and a 32-inch Sanyo television. When detectives knocked on the door of a home in the 6400 block of Panama Avenue West on Saturday to talk with the homeowner, “(Tyler) Anderson was present and lo and behold he was playing a Play Station 3 on a 32-inch Sanyo television,” police said.

A 26-year-old Maplewood woman was arrested for probable cause second-degree DWI after she rear-ended a parked vehicle on Oakridge Road. The woman’s vehicle had major damage and was towed from the scene. There were no injuries. According to police, the result of the woman’s preliminary breath test was .209. The woman has a prior DWI conviction from 2005.

A 24-year-old Lakeland man was arrested for probable cause second-degree DWI after he was stopped on Chestnut Street. According to police, the result of the man’s preliminary breath test was .238.  The man allegedly refused to take a blood or breath test. He was convicted of a prior DWI in 2010.

Police responded to a report of a wolf sighting near Manning Avenue North and 80th Street North. The officer who responded did not locate the wolf, but believes it was seen near Highway 96 earlier in the day.

May 23

The theft of 15 antique coins valued at $1,200 was reported at Midtown Antiques, 301 Main St. S.

A 22-year-old Cottage Grove woman was arrested for probable cause fourth-degree DWI after she was stopped in the 1800 block of Main Street. According to police, the results of the woman’s preliminary breath test was .15.

May 24

Charges of fleeing police in a motor vehicle are pending against a 45-year-old Stillwater man after he allegedly fled police in a vehicle, parked it and then ran away on foot near Sherburn and Mulberry streets. Police attempted to stop the man for speeding, but when the officer attempted to make a traffic stop, the man accelerated, according to the report. The pursuit came to an end on Rice Street, where the man allegedly left his car and fled on foot. Three hours after the incident, the man reportedly called police and reported his vehicle was stolen. The case remains under investigation.

A 77-year-old Maple Grove man was cited for speeding after he was clocked travelling 48 mph in a 30-mph zone in the 1900 block of Broadway Street North.

May 26

A 19-year-old West Lakeland Township man was cited for violating the city’s solicitor ordinance after police responded to a solicitor complaint in the 500 block of Newman Trail.

May 28

Police were called to a report of a Porta Potty for the marathon that was dropped off on accident at a home in the 800 block of 2nd Street South. A Porta Potty crew came back to remove the unit.

May 29

An 18-year-old Eagan man was charged with felony-level fleeing police in a motor vehicle on Oak Street West. According to police, the officers were conducting a neighborhood saturation trying to catch car prowlers, when an officer noticed that the Eagan teen appeared intoxicated while getting into a vehicle. The officer told the Eagan man and his friend, a 20-year-old North St. Paul man, to go to a friend’s house and not to drive. A short while later, the officer saw the vehicle drive by, turn off the lights and start to flee. The officer eventually caught up to the vehicle, but the driver and passenger had fled on foot. Police caught the Eagan man after he attempted to scale a 6-foot fence and fell down. The passenger was not located.

A 28-year-old man from Baytown Township was arrested for probably cause fourth-degree DWI and cited for a seatbelt violation and driving too close to another vehicle in the 300 block of Main Street. According to police, the man had a preliminary breath test reading of .098.

May 30

Police were called to a report that an iPod and Leatherman tool were stolen from an unlocked vehicle in the 1400 block of Meadowlark Drive.

May 31

Police responded to a report of theft from an unlocked motor vehicle in the 600 block of Oak Street West. An MP3 player and flashlight were reported stolen. 

The preceding items were taken from theStillwater Police Department. In all incidents where an arrest occurred, a charge is merely an accusation, and not evidence of guilt. The arrested person is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law. Incidents are listed in the order in which they were reported, not necessarily the order in which they occurred. When names are used, it indicates that felony charges have been filed in Washington County District Court.
