Stillwater Police Blotter: Stolen Car Recovered, Drunk Dialing and Prowlers Cited

Stillwater police also responded to reports of a stolen firearm and fraud.

A 17-year-old Stillwater boy was arrested on June 6 for allegedly stealing a car. A 2011 Hyundai Elantra was reported stolen near Second and Myrtle streets Thursday night between 7:30 and 9 p.m. According to police, the keys were left in the center console of the vehicle. On June 6 the stolen vehicle was located in the Walmart parking lot by Oak Park Heights police. The boy allegedly fled when he saw police, but left his backpack in the backseat of the car. The teen told police the backpack was stolen. 

A 24-year-old Stillwater man was arrested June 7 on suspicion of second-degree DWI—test refusal, obstructing the legal process with force and parking in a handicap parking space after police were called at 7:22 a.m. to a report of an intoxicated driver at Food and Fuel, 1101 Owens Street N. When police arrived, the man was allegedly passed out in the back of his vehicle. The officer awoke the man, who allegedly became belligerent and showed signs of extreme intoxication. Based on the officer’s training, the man was arrested on suspicion of DWI. When at the jail, the man allegedly refused a blood-alcohol test and was “too drunk” to dial the phone. The man reportedly passed out during phone privileges. As police attempted to jail the man, he allegedly got into a fight with the arresting officer. In addition to being charged with DWI and obstructing, the man was also cited for parking in a handicap parking space. 

Three Stillwater men (ages 19, 21 and 21) were each cited with lurking and tampering with a motor vehicle June 5 after police were called to a report of possible car prowlers in the 1000 block of 6th Avenue South. A resident told police that the men attempted to break into his girlfriend’s car, when he confronted them and they fled. Police located three men matching the victim’s description in a nearby neighborhood. The men were cited and released.

Police are investigating a report that a firearm was stolen from a home in the 1600 block of Orleans Street West. According to police, an officer received a tip from a Washington County detective that a 20-year-old Stillwater man was in possession of a stolen World-War II era Polish 9 mm Rueger pistol valued at $5,000. The man told police he had the gun but disposed of it, but police would not disclose the location. The firearm has not been recovered.

June 4

A 24-year-old Stillwater man was arrested for suspicion of DWI after he was stopped in the 1300 block of Greeley Street. According to police, the result of the man’s preliminary breath test was .17.

June 7

Police responded to a report of a suspicious person carrying what appeared to be a rifle on Willard Street West. When police arrived, the officer found that a teen made a rifle-shaped cane as a school woodworking project. The boy was taken home and told to leave the cane in the house.

A resident of the 3800 block of Abercrombie Lane reported identity theft after she learned that someone used her social security number to gain unlawful employment in New York. 

The preceding items were taken from theStillwater Police Department. In all incidents where an arrest occurred, a charge is merely an accusation, and not evidence of guilt. The arrested person is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law. Incidents are listed in the order in which they were reported, not necessarily the order in which they occurred. When names are used, it indicates that felony charges have been filed in Washington County District Court.
