Stillwater Police Investigate Theft of Two Honda Civics

Two vehicles were reported stolen in Stillwater in two days. Both vehicles were later recovered. The cases remain under investigation.

Police are investigating two reports of stolen vehicles in two days from parking lots in Stillwater. In each case, the stolen vehicle was a 1998 Honda Civic.

The first theft report was taken by police on Jan. 23 and occurred across the street from the Modernistic parking lot on Industrial Boulevard. The keys to the vehicle were left in the center console, according to the police report, but not in plain view from outside the vehicle.

The vehicle’s owner told police he left the keys in the console because he thought it was a safe lot with working surveillance cameras. But after talking with owners of the lot, the man was told the cameras are not operable.

The second report was taken by police on Jan. 25 when the owner of a 1998 Honda Civic told police her locked vehicle was parked in the 300 block of Water Street—in the lot between and . The woman believes her car was stolen between 5:30 p.m. Jan. 24 and noon Jan. 25.

Honda Civics are perennially on the list of America’s most stolen cars.

The reason, according to the MSN report, based on the National Crime Information Center, is because the older models provide the best market for stolen vehicle parts.

In the Stillwater theft cases both vehicles were paid off, according to police.

The vehicle stolen from the lot across the street from Modernistic was recovered in the parking lot of the in Oakdale. Oakdale police reported that the vehicle had been sitting in the lot for about one day.

There was damage to the dash of the vehicle consistent with the theft of a stereo, the report states. The keys were no longer inside of the vehicle.

The second vehicle was recovered in St. Paul today, according to police. One person is in custody of the St. Paul Police Department.

The cases remain under investigation.
