Group Announces Plans for New Grocery Store, Retail Space at Woodbury’s Future Urban Village (Updated)

Plans for a future urban village at the southwest corner of Radio Drive and Bailey Road took a step forward Thursday as a group announced its plans for a grocery-anchored shopping center.

United Properties, along with project partner Jerry’s Enterprises, Inc., says it will build a 90,000-square-foot retail center at the site.

“We’re very excited to be bringing grocery-anchored retail to serve southern Woodbury,” Keith Ulstad, senior vice president of development at United Properties, said in a release. “Our goal is to create a shopping center that will meet residents’ day-to-day needs with amenities such as a grocery store, coffee shop, gas station and pharmacy.”

The grocery will be a Jerry’s Enterprises store, "but the name is to be determined," United Properties spokeswoman Jessie Folkens told Patch, correcting an earlier statement. 

It will span 68,000 square feet on a 30-acre site, according to the release.

The grocery store will also have a liquor store attached to it, leaving about 13,000 square feet of retail space for other businesses, Folkens said. No other retailers have committed to the remaining space, she said, though United Properties is in talks with several companies.

Construction is set to begin June.

"We're excited that they're looking to move forward in 2013," said Eric Searles, associate planner with Woodbury.

The city has not seen a formal development application as yet, but will meet with those involved in the coming weeks, he said.

With the Bielenberg Sports Center expansion, the opening up of Phase 2 for development and the coming expansion of Radio Drive, there is a "nice synergy for that area," Searles said.

Plans for the new mixed-use development, called Bielenberg Gardens, call for housing and retail space at the approximately 200-acre site.

Features of the development include a “green-space network,” senior housing, water amenities, office space, a pharmacy and a location for a fast-food establishment, among other things, according to officials at a June 2011 City Council workshop.

Project partners include Architectural Consortium, LLC, and engineers Kimley-Horn, according to the release.

Edina-based Jerry’s Enterprises operates 37 food stores in the Minnesota, Wisconsin, and Florida, under the retail banners of Jerry’s Foods, Cub Foods, County Market, and Save-A-Lot, the release says.

Jerry's owns several Cub Stores (including the exsiting Woodbury location) as well as the County Markets in North Branch and Hudson, WI.

Thanks for the info Lockwood. I should probably check back and see if they know exactly what kind of grocery store it's going to be.

Checked in on this yesterday. Still uncertain exactly what kind of grocery store it's going to be. But it sounds like they'll send out an announcement when the decision is made.

I haven't heard any updates on this project for a long time. Do we know what the store is going to be or when they are going to start building?

We'll see some signs of development this fall, when we'll also know exactly what type of grocery store it will be.
