In 'Border Wars,' MN and WI Go Head to Head on Tax Reciprocity

The dream that taxpayers who live in one state and work in the other could file just one income-tax return died another death at a U of M forum.

Will residents of Minnesota and Wisconsin who work in the other state be able to file a single income tax form again any time soon?

Shrugs.

That was the answer Monday from Minnesota Revenue Commissioner Myron Frans and Richard Chandler, secretary of the Wisconsin Department of Revenue, according to the Star Tribune

The states' two top tax officials appeared at a forum called Border Wars: Taxes, Jobs, and the Economy in Minnesota and Wisconsin at the University of Minnesota's Center for the Study of Politics and Governance.

Since a deal between the states ended in 2009, the 80,000 workers whose jobs are across the border have had to file two income tax forms, the St. Paul Pioneer Press reported.

A $6 million dispute remains, with Chandler calling it a "ransom," according to Finance and Commerce. "We don’t think it’s appropriate to subsidize Wisconsin."
