Interested in a Municipal Pool in Stillwater? Here's Two Chances to Get Involved

If you have interest in discussing the idea of a municipal pool in Stillwater, you may want to consider attending a meeting tonight at City Hall or tomorrow at Shanghai Bistro in downtown Stillwater.

If you have interest in discussing the idea of a municipal pool in Stillwater, there are two meetings this week you may want to consider attending.

On Monday, Sept. 24, at 7 p.m. the Park and Recreation Commission will meet in City Council Chambers to discuss a municipal pool proposal. Jim Maland of Bonestroo Engineering, an expert on swimming pools, will be presenting information.

On Tuesday, Sept. 25, at 7 p.m. there will be a social hour for swimming pool advocates at Shanghai Bistro. This gathering will give attendees a chance to meet people who are enthusiastic about having a municipal pool in Stillwater. The meeting room will have a cash bar and light snacks available.

Commission members told her that at one time property near the ice arena was considered for a municipal pool, but now with the space and setback requirements for the Armory there is not enough room on that site. Commission members also said the Stillwater Swim Club looked at trying to build an aquatics facility next to Brines, but it became cost prohibitive at $7-10 million.

But Gulden told the commission she doesn’t have an aquatic center in mind—just a modest pool for area families to.

Commission members suggested that pool advocates attempt to partner an area athletic club—and said although they aren’t opposed to a pool—there is a concern with the cost to build and maintain a pool.
