Sequestration Could Hurt Thousands of Federal Workers, Retirees in Minnesota

Minnesota has about 59,000 federal employees and retirees. Washington County accounts for about 3 percent of that total.

Washington, D.C., may be the hub of the federal workforce, but Minnesota has tens of thousands of federal employees and retirees who could be hurt by the looming sequestration crisis.

If the president and Congress can’t strike a deal by Friday, a series of mandated federal budget cuts would automatically kick in. That would force more than a million federal employees to take unpaid leave, according to the Washington Post.

Minnesota, alone, has about 59,000 federal employees and retirees.

Washington County accounts for 1,779 of that total, or about 3 percent. Most of those are Department of Labor and Postal Service employees.

What is never mentioned in these articles that when politicians speak of "cuts" they're not really cuts they're just less of an increase. If they're budgeting for an 8% increase and only get a 4% increase that's a "cut". Who really thinks we can really cut federal spending without some employees being let go? Best Buy announced today they're firing 400 people to trim their administrative budget. While we can have empathy for those losing their jobs, hiring AND firing is a reality in private business. Firing hardly ever happens in government though, but it needs to. Then sell the post office to Fedex or UPS.
