St. Croix River Crossing: What is Load Testing?

MnDOT explains the first phase of the St. Croix RIver Crossing Project, load testing. Load testing is set to begin this summer and last about three months.

A foundation load test project is happening this summer at the St. Croix River Crossing site to provide bridge designers with critical information on soil conditions under the river.

Construction of the new bridge is expected to begin in 2013 and should take about three years to complete. Work on the approaching roadways will also begin in 2013.

Engineers must consider multiple types of loads when building bridges: the bridge, utilities and vehicles. They also must determine that the bridge will stand up to forces from water, wind, snow, ice, temperature change and possible barge impact.
