Woodbury Plans State's Largest Playground for Kids of All Abilities: Twin Cities East

The Woodbury City Council got a look at drawings for Madison's Place, which would be built at the Bielenberg Sports Center.

Madison’s Place, a playground for children of all abilities planned at the Bielenberg Sports Center, would be the largest such structure in the state.

“It will be fantastic,” said John Slack, Stantec landscape architect, who relayed that information to the Woodbury City Council during a workshop Wednesday.

The playground is the brainchild of the Madison Claire Foundation, which is raising funds for its construction. Similar playgrounds have become regional attractions, Slack said.

The surface for the playground would be Pebble-Flex, a rubber-like matting that can support wheelchairs and crutches. It’s similar to the surface of Miracle Field, said Bob Klatt, director of the city’s Parks and Recreation Department.

There are other unique parts of the playground that would not be found anywhere else in the world, Slack said.

And it’s not just for kids, said David Millington, of the Madison Claire Foundation, who was at the meeting with his wife Dana. The playground could also be used by “grandparents that would just like to be able to walk up there,” he said.

A pathway could also be build from the playground to Miracle Field.

Millington said having a firm date and drawings will help with further fundraising efforts and partnerships with construction companies. The plans have been in the works since 2009.

“We’re very excited,” he said.
