Stillwater Area Schools: 'Difficult Decisions Ahead' about Whether to Cancel Classes Again

Officials will decide by 8 p.m. Sunday whether to hold classes on Monday or Tuesday.

With another arctic Monday looming, Stillwater Area Public Schools officials are pondering whether to cancel classes. They announced Friday afternoon that they'll decide by 8 p.m. Sunday

Weather Update: More cold temperatures mean difficult decisions ahead this weekend.

Weather forecasters are predicting another round of extremely cold temperatures and wind chills for Monday and Tuesday, January 27 and 28 – making this the coldest winter in 20 years. With this in mind we will be keeping a close eye on the weather over the weekend, and we will make every effort to inform families prior to 8 p.m. on Sunday should school need to be delayed or canceled. We encourage parents/guardians to consider alternate plans for their children’s care in the event our school day is impacted.

Consideration to delay the start of school or cancel school will be triggered if the National Weather Service projects an air temperature of -20 or colder or a wind chill temperature of -40 or colder in the morning hours.

These are very difficult decisions to make, as our desire is to keep students in school and learning. The decision to cancel school is especially challenging as we now face adding days to the calendar. The safety of our children, however, is the most important factor we will consider when making decisions about school closings or delays. Many of our students must wait for buses in unprotected and isolated areas, while others walk to school.

Ultimately, if you feel that it is too dangerous to send your children to school next week because of the cold conditions we only ask that you call the school to report their absence.

Let’s hope for a warm up over the weekend! Thank you for your support as we make these difficult decisions.
