Stillwater Area High School Grad Dies in an Underwater Welding Accident in North Dakota

Funeral services for Joseph Patrick Gordon Gould, a 1997 graduate of Stillwater Area High School, will be held this week in Edina.

A Stillwater Area High School graduate and former standout athlete died last week in an underwater welding accident in North Dakota. Joseph Patrick Gordon Gould, 32, drowned in Lake Sakakawea on Oct. 19 when he was making repairs to the city of Parshall’s water intake structure, according to The Bismark Tribune. Gould was a 1997 graduate of Stillwater Area High School, where he was a state-ranked wrestler and standout football player. After graduating from Stillwater Area High School, he went on to wrestle for the U.S. Marine Corps. The McLean County Sheriff's Office told the Associated Press that Gould had been installing pipe 125 feet below the surface of the lake when his equipment became tangled and he was trapped. Flags At Half-Staff Monday For Woodbury Marine

Sgt. Ian Williams McConnell died as an active-duty Marine July 6 in California.

Gov. Mark Dayton on Monday ordered flags to be flown at half-staff today in honor of a Woodbury Marine who died July 6 in California. Sgt. Ian Williams McConnell, 24, a Hill-Murray graduate, was to be laid to rest Monday, July 18, according to multiple reports. He was to be eulogized at Episcopal Church of the Ascension in Stillwater and buried at Fort Snelling. A pastor at Ascension told the Associated Press that McConnell committed suicide. In a proclamation, Gov. Mark Dayton said McConnell was “a dedicated member of the United States Marine Corps.” He served in Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation Enduring Freedom in Afghanistan, and was recently accepted into the Marine Corps’ Special Operations Command, according to the proclamation…
