Washington County Board Election Results (Updated)

Weik, Miron come out on top; Kriesel wins unopposed.

The results for the 2012 Washington County Board races were essentially settled as of 2:30 a.m. Wednesday.  All results are unofficial per the Secretary of State’s website. In the district that represents most of Woodbury, Lisa Weik was re-elected. Weik earned 59.21 percent of the vote (12,127 total). Challenger Nancy Remakel, a former Woodbury City Council member, earned 40.20 percent of the vote (8,233). Challenger Ted Bearth defeated incumbent Bill Pulkrabek, who was running for his third term but was mired by a domestic incident earlier this year.  Bearth, a former Oakdale City Council mayor, got 52.17 percent of the vote (11,123 total) to Pulkrabek’s 47.16 percent (10,054). The district includes the northwest part of Woodbury and all …

Wow, Hegberg is out... he was always very nice, but he was a RINO (republican in name only)... he'd always hang out by the republican booth at the WC fair, talk about how he was a conservative, and then he'd vote right along with Weik... As chair he's primarily to blame for the $157,000,000 debt burdan we have.... I hope Miron can be more transparent and issue in common sense. We'll miss …   more ›

Hitting the Warrior Dash? Be Prepared

Have you done the Warrior Dash? What can you tell people planning to tackle the course this weekend?

The Warrior Dash looks like fun, right? Well, it is. But it’s plenty of work, too. I participated in last year’s Warrior Dash, a 5K at Afton Alps that includes several obstacles along the way. It’s not going up walls and jumping over fire that gets you. It’s those hills. Normally reserved for skiers, the hills are where the pack thins from those who trained hard leading up to the event and those more interested in the beer afterward. This year’s event is set for this weekend, June 30 and July 1. It might be a little late, but find the biggest hill in Woobury and run up it. More than once. Take it or leave it, but I wish I'd done more hills before last year's race. Organizers anticipate the events will draw 18,500 participants and 10,000 …

I am planning to do the Rugged Maniac in Taylors Falls in September. It is also a 5K running/obstacle course and it will be the first time I do such an event. Thank you for sharing your tips as I found them helpful in preparing myself for the Rugged Maniac. If anyone else has additional tips to share, I would appreciate it.   more ›

Packed House: Woodbury Community Expo is Saturday

The event runs from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. April 14 at the Bielenberg Sports Center in Woodbury.

After three years, word has gotten around. The Woodbury Community Expo sold out its available booth space for the first time this year, according to Kim Snyder with the Woodbury Chamber of Commerce, which organizes the event. “We feel really good about that,” she said. The third annual event is set for 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, April 14, at the Bielenberg Sports Center. It is free to attend. The Woodbury Community Expo will once again feature dozens of exhibitors, live music, prize raffles, activities and plenty of spots to grab a bite. But chamber officials have been looking to draw a younger crowd this year, Snyder said, thus the Minnesota National Guard climbing wall and demonstrations from Mad Science, among other things. “For the…

Bachmann Beat: Don't Blame Wall Street for U.S. 'Banana Republic'

A daily roundup of news and commentary about U.S. Rep. Michele Bachmann.

During a speech at Iowa State University yesterday, sixth-district congresswoman and presidential candidate Michele Bachmann blamed government regulation, not free markets, for America's financial woes. Bachmann said the federal government forced banks to lower lending standards and make "politically correct loans" to people who weren't credit-worthy. She also took aim at the Occupy Wall Street movement, saying they need to "wake up and stop blaming job creators." Quote: “A vocal minority called Occupy Wall Street believes that the problem we face is capitalism or free markets. It’s not. The problem is government doing what both the constitution and decent morality prohibit, that is cronyism capitalism, or forcefully taking your money for …

Bachmann Beat: Sharia, Greece and the Great Society

A daily roundup of news and commentary about U.S. Rep. Michele Bachmann.

During an appearance on an Iowa radio show yesterday, Bachmann called for a repeal of Medicare, Medicaid and other "Great Society" welfare programs, the Des Moines Register reports. Later in the day, she made similar comments to a group of business leaders. Bachmann also used her time on the air to criticize the European Union — particularly Greece, which she called a "tantrum-throwing nation" lacking in fiscal discipline. During the same show, Bachmann expressed concern that Sharia (Islamic religious law) is quietly infiltrating U.S. courtrooms. You might be aware that Bachmann's memoir, Core of Conviction is due out Nov. 21. Yesterday, her campaign sent out a fundraising email offering to send advance copies of the book to supporters who…

Bachmann Beat: Bachmann Opposes Ethanol Subsidies

A daily roundup of news and commentary about U.S. Rep. Michele Bachmann.

Yesterday, during a forum in Pella, Iowa, sixth-district congresswoman and Republican presidential candidate Michele Bachmann said she opposed ethanol subsidies. Bachmann argued energy subsidies in general wouldn't be necessary if the federal government were to reduce regulatory burdens. When asked if that included federal subsidies for ethanol, she replied, "That includes all energy." The Des Moines Register has more details on the forum itself, which was focused on issues facing American manufacturers. Meanwhile, the Daily Mail has a rundown of the ongoing conflict between Bachmann and Ed Rollins, her former campaign manager. Earlier this week, Rollins told ABC News that Bachmann is "out of money and out of ideas" in Iowa. He also told …

Bachmann Beat: Iowa Victory Still Sought as Former Allies Turn Against Campaign

A daily roundup of news and commentary about U.S. Rep. Michele Bachmann.

Can sixth-district congresswoman and Republican presidential candidate Michele Bachmann still win the Iowa caucuses? The latest polls seem to say "no," but some new reports seem to say "maybe." UPI says that Bachmann is still very popular in Iowa, despite her sagging poll numbers there. A Bachmann spokesman said the current polls don't reflect the "enthusiasm and grassroots organization" of her supporters in the state. An analysis by the Concord Monitor seems to support that notion. The campaign considers a victory in Iowa to be a key step toward winning the GOP nomination. USA Today says that in this highly volatile campaign season, anything can still happen in the state. Yesterday, in a move apparently meant to show the strength of their…

The negative tone has more to do with the fact that his is a candidate who has "gone negative" from the very start of her campaign. The attack strategy is apparent in her rhetoric in debates, stump speeches, and newsletters to contributors. She opposes and criticizes every move by Obama (even when he is successful, she finds something offbeat or makes a statement based on her "facts", which …   more ›
