Minnesota Ironman Bicycle Ride Takes to the St. Croix River Valley on Sunday

The 47th annual Minnesota Ironman Bicycle Ride will host about 4,500 cyclists this weekend in the St. Croix River Valley. The ride begins Sunday morning at the Washington County Fairgrounds. You ready to ride? Tell us about your training in the comments.

In the shadows of a spring full of snow and cold, the Minnesota Ironman Bicycle Ride will catch a break this weekend with forecasted temperatures in the 70s for the annual kickoff to the spring cycling season. After 13 years in the south metro, specifically Lakeville, the long-standing bike ride has been retooled, and will take place Sunday, April 28, in the St. Croix River Valley. The new course will start at the Washington County Fairgrounds and wind through Scandia, Stillwater, Afton, Lake Elmo, Marine on St. Croix and Oak Park Heights. Minnesota Ironman Bicycle Ride: Registration Opens Feb. 1, Proposed Routes Released

The annual rite of spring for Minnesota bicyclists, the Minnesota Ironman Bicycle Ride, will take place in the St. Croix Valley this year after spending 13 years in the south metro. You can register for the 47th annual bicycle tour at midnight, Feb. 1.

Registration for the 2013 Minnesota Ironman Bicycle Ride opens at midnight Friday, Feb. 1. The annual rite of spring for Minnesota bicyclists will take place in the St. Croix Valley this year after spending 13 years in the south metro. “We’re really excited,” Ride Director Jon Ridge said. “We really like the ride we produce, period; but this year’s change in venue and location is truly exciting.” The ride started in Minneapolis 1967 and then moved to Buffalo, and eventually, Lakeville. Frigid Weather Ensures Lake Elmo Lions Annual Ice Fishing Contest

The Lake Elmo Lions ice fishing contest is set for Sunday, Feb. 3 from 1–3 p.m. on Lake Jane.

Old Man Winter has brought Minnesotans plenty of frigid weather lately, and locally, that will allow the Lake Elmo Lions to host their annual ice fishing contest on Lake Jane. “Last year the Lions Club had to cancel the contest due to thin ice,” Diane Knoll of the Lions Club said. “But now, with two weeks to spare, we can safely announce this year's contest thanks to this week's frigid temps.” The ice fishing contest is set for 1-3 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 3, on Lake Jane (located north of Highway 5 on Jamaca Avenue). Tickets are available for purchase at numerous Lake Elmo businesses prior to the contest for $4. Admission is $5 the day of the event. Concerned About Asian Carp? Experts Say We Should Be

A Minnesota DNR official is urging boaters and fishermen to take heed of the menacing fish’s advance into local waters.

Out of sight is out of mind for many boaters along the St. Croix and Mississippi waterways. But that doesn’t mean the spectre of invasive Asian carp isn’t lurking beneath the surface. The carp, infamous for hurling out of the water in hordes (silver carp) and siphoning up vital plankton (bighead carp) that native fish depend on, have been making a northward trek up the Mississippi since escaping into open waters from southern fish ponds in the 80s.  “I think we should be concerned that if they do become established they could affect a lot of our native fishes,” said Tim Schlagenhaft, a planner with the Minnesota DNR.  “It could affect our recreational use and they jump up out of the water so there’s some safety hazards. “We should be …

Lake Elmo Lions Ice Fishing Contest Cancelled Due to Thin-Ice Conditions

Although the ice fishing contest is cancelled, the $1,000 cash drawing will still be held at 1 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 5, at Lions Park.

The Lake Elmo Lions Club has cancelled their annual ice fishing contest on Lake Jane due to thin ice conditions as specified under DNR permit regulations.  This would be the 55th year for the event that combines family fun while raising money for various community programs. The $1,000 cash drawing will still be held at 1 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 5, at Lions Park - located across from the Lake Elmo Fire Department.  Tickets for the $1,000.00 drawing are available for purchase at the following Lake Elmo businesses: Lake Elmo Oil, Lake Elmo Barber Shop, Lake Elmo Inn, Hagberg’s, Twin Point Tavern and The Lake Elmo Bank, for $4.
