Bachmann Beat: Debate Recap

A daily roundup of news and commentary about U.S. Rep. Michele Bachmann.

Sixth-district congresswoman and Republican presidential candidate Michele Bachmann participated in a joint Fox News-Google presidential debate last night. You can watch the entire event, including pre-debate and post-debate analysis, on Fox News Live. You can also read the full trancript. During the debate, Bachmann addressed more than a half-dozen issues, from education to the economy. Below is a sampling of what she said. On taxation: "You should get to keep every dollar that you earn. That's your money; that's not the government's money ... Obviously, we have to give money back to the government so that we can run the government, but we have to have a completely different mindset." On education: "I would take the entire federal …

Bachmann Beat: Big Stakes at Tonight's Debate

A daily roundup of news and commentary about U.S. Rep. Michele Bachmann.

Sixth-district congresswoman Michele Bachmann will be among the candidates participating in a Republican presidential debate that begins at 6:30 p.m. You can watch the event live on MSNBC or over the web via Politico. The stakes appear to be high for Bachmann at tonight's event. The Star Tribune says her campaign is hoping to regain some of the momentum it lost over the last month. In particular, Bachmann must distinguish herself from Texas Gov. Rick Perry, with whom she'll share the stage for the first time ever. (Side note: Perry might not actually be there, after all.) Around the web, news reports are rife with speculation that Bachmann's campaign is in trouble. The New York Times says that yesterday's big staff shakeup, with the …

Bachmann Beat: Back in Minnesota

A daily roundup of news and commentary about U.S. Rep. Michele Bachmann.

Sixth-district congresswoman and presidential candidate Michele Bachmann is returning to Minnesota today to address the American Legion's national convention in Minneapolis. During a speech in Iowa yesterday, Bachmann said President Obama's decision to schedule a primetime speech on jobs at the same time as a Republican presidential debate shows "maybe a little insecurity" on his part, and suggested he might be trying to distract Americans from what the "next president" is going to say. She made the comments at a Tea Party Express rally in Des Moines — her first visit to Iowa since winning the Ames straw poll. CNN notes an unusually low turnout for the event. Her speech focused heavily on the economy, which she said she could turn around …

Is she just coming to MN for a couple of hours to speak, and then run back "out" to Iowa, New Hampshire, S. Carolina and a bunch of other states that are NOT Minnesota? I'm also wondering if she will even STOP BY in the 6th. I mean, we elected Michele, and last I heard we're kinda paying her BIG salary. A little attention, and some real work on the 6th's behalf - from our photogenic House Rep …   more ›

Bachmann Beat: Will Perry 'Steal Bachmann's Thunder'?

A daily roundup of news and commentary about U.S. Rep. Michele Bachmann.

The results of the latest national survey are not good news for sixth-district congresswoman and presidential candidate Michele Bachmann. A new Quinnipiac University poll shows Texas Gov. Rick Perry leading the GOP field with 24 percent support among likely Republican voters. Bachmann comes in not second, not third, but fourth, trailing Perry by a full 14 points. Politico notes that it's the fourth survey in a row showing Perry as the Republican frontrunner. On that note, the International Business Times says Perry is continuing to steal Bachmann's thunder as the candidate of choice for tea partiers. Bachmann is back in Iowa today, speaking at a Tea Party Express rally in Des Moines. The event marks her first appearance in that state since…

Bachmann Daily Beat: Book Deal, Florida Travels and 'Wet People'

A daily roundup of news and commentary about U.S. Rep. Michele Bachmann.

Sixth-district congresswoman and Republican presidential candidate Michele Bachmann has a book deal. Bachmann's memoir, which has already been written and is due for release in November, will "share previously untold stories" about her life. As the Associated Press notes, memoirs have become standard fare for modern presidential campaigns. The New York Times has the lastest on Bachmann's campaign travels in Florida, where she spent much of yesterday courting Cuban-American voters. Her declaration that she would be open to drilling for oil in the Everglades has some Floridians confused; apparently, it's not a normal topic of discussion in the state. Celebrity gossip blogger Perez Hilton posted a video purporting to show Bachmann exclaiming…

Bachmann Daily Beat: Tax Cuts and Drilling in the Everglades

A daily roundup of news and commentary about U.S. Rep. Michele Bachmann.

Sixth-district congresswoman Michele Bachmann is in Florida today, where she will continue a series of presidential campaign stops. While in Florida, Bachmann has been busy talking economics. She told visitors to a Jacksonville Beach sandwich shop that she wants to reduce corporate taxes and wouldn't rule out changing the federal minimum wage too. At a separate event on Saturday, she promised that a package of tax cuts could turn the economy around within a single economic quarter after she becomes president. Bachmann also blasted "radical environmentalists" for blocking an expansion of domestic oil and gas energy. She said she would consider opening up the Everglades for oil drilling and once again promised to eliminate the "job-killing" …

Not simplistic or naive at all. I have many friends on both sides of the aisle and we get into very heated discussions. Our beliefs and views are adequately expressed and we don't alienate each other. That's because we are respectful of other people even when we disagree with their views. The problem with too many of the anonymous crowd is that they refuse to be respectful. Apparently they feel …   more ›

Bachmann Daily Beat: Turn Off the Lights and Lock the Doors (in D.C.)

A daily roundup of news and commentary about U.S. Rep. Michele Bachmann.

Sixth-district congresswoman and presidential candidate Michele Bachmann held a town hall meeting in South Carolina last night, where she warned voters that 2012 is a "last chance election" for Americans. She called Obama's health care reform law "socialized medicine" and warned that it would make big government a permanent fixture in the United States unless repealed.  She also said the country will need "a miracle" to turn its economy around, and blamed the anemic recovery on too much federal spending. She made this promise to supporters: "We’re going to be turning a lot of lights off and locking a lot of doors in Washington, D.C." South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley joined Bachmann onstage. Bachmann has proved she can run a solid campaign …

The Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (PPACA) is not socialized medicine, although Bachmann and her party have done a great job lying to the American people about it. The Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (PPACA) is actually way, way to the right of a health care proposal made by the Great Socialist President - Richard M. Nixon. The fact that Michele keeps repeating these lies, …   more ›

Bachmann Daily Beat: The 22nd Most Powerful Woman

A daily roundup of news and commentary about U.S. Rep. Michele Bachmann.

The results of yet another new poll seem to show 6th District congresswoman and presidential candidate Michele Bachmann's popularity waning among conservatives. Bachmann's poll numbers have been lackluster ever since Texas Gov. Rick Perry officially entered the 2012 race. The Star Tribune says the last two national polls seem to spell bad news for Bachmann. Meanwhile, Forbes released its list of the world's 100 most powerful women. Bachmann ranks 22nd, right between the commissioner of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration and the prime minister of Australia. Here's her profile. The New York Times explores an aspect of Bachmann's campaign that has drawn fire from critics recently—its tightly controlled nature. The Times says the issue is …

Let's see... Congress is adjourned for the month of August. Obama was in campaign mode in MN, IA, IL, on a million dollar bus built in Canada. Spell Job's? Obama has a plan, that's his talk anyway, only time will tell..... Why? Because Obama needs to take a vacation first, and will share the "secret" after Labor Day. Bachmann Daily Beat: Can She Win?

A daily roundup of news and commentary about U.S. Rep. Michele Bachmann.

With all the focus on Michele Bachmann's presidential campaign, it's easy to forget about that other important political contest—the race to represent the 6th Congressional District.  MPR ponders the future of Bachmann's seat in the U.S. House of Representatives. Could Bachmann beat President Obama? Will she even get the chance? The Hill says that the recent entrance of Rick Perry into the race has cast doubt on the future of Bachmann's campaign. However, at least one pollster says there's still a path to the nomination for Bachmann. On that note, a new poll shows Bachmann trailing both Perry and Romney in Iowa. Overall, her numbers appear to be slipping. Politico says the conservative movement's intelligentsia are deeply dissatisfied with…

Sure she can win. Just because loser liberals in Minnesota try to pain her with the fruit cake brush and Chris "Daddy Got Me This Job" Wallace is to stupid to understand what the genuine article is doesn't mean a majority of the voters can't think for themselves. She's a much better speaker than Obama. She can think off the top of her head, while Obama has to have a TelePrompTer in front of him. …   more ›

Bachmann Daily Beat: Closing In On Obama, Trailing Other Candidates

A daily roundup of news and commentary about U.S. Rep. Michele Bachmann.

A new Gallup poll shows 6th District Congresswoman Michele Bachmann within 4 percentage points of President Barack Obama if the 2012 election were held today. The poll is not all good news for Bachmann, who trails Mitt Romney, Rick Perry and Ron Paul in potential matchups against the president. The Washington Post parses the numbers and says they likely illustrate growing frustration with Obama's presidency.  The Daily Mail agrees, and says the fact that Bachmann is closing in on Obama is very bad news for the president. Talking Points Memo takes a different look at the poll numbers and concludes that Bachmann's shot at the GOP nomination may already have come and gone. NewsMax says Bachmann and Rick Perry are vying for the support of …
