The annual rite of Spring passage rolls into Stillwater on April 28. Are you ready to ride?
It's four weeks to go until the 47th annual Minnesota Ironman Bicycle Ride rolls into Stillwater. Bob McEnaney, a certified USA Cycling coach, suggests now is the time to start training. Even with snow still on the ground, McEnaney suggests increasing saddle time now to prepare for the big ride. The ride is April 28 beginning at 6:30 a.m., leaving from the Washington Co. Fairgrounds. There are five routes, ranging from 15 miles to 100 miles. More details can be found at the Ironman Bicycle Ride website.

Stillwater Historian Donald Empson submitted these photos, along with some information, about groups who gathered at the Stillwater Lift Bridge to protest, and oppose those who protested, the Iraq War.
This week is the 10-year anniversary of the beginning of the U.S.-led invasion of Iraq that eventually led to the capture, trial and execution of Iraqi President Saddam Hussein. Ten years later, Stillwater Historian Donald Empson submitted these photos, along with this information: Through the fall and winter of 2003 a group of about 25 of us had an Iraq anti-war protest every Sunday at the Lift Bridge. As the war grew closer, a group of those opposed to our anti-war sentiments also appeared at the bridge. Notice Judge Rosalie Wahl in the anti-war protest group. One day when we finished our protest, a car drove up and a familiar looking black man came over to us to encourage our protest. Turned out to be Julian Bond.

County board to celebrate opening of Nordic Center, lighted ski trails at Lake Elmo Park Reserve.
Washington County has already earned an award for the lighted cross-country skiing trails at the Lake Elmo Park Reserve. On Jan. 11, the county board will celebrate the official opening of the trails and new Nordic Center. “Cross country skiing trails have (received) great comments from the public,” County Commissioner Gary Kriesel said when the board approved the project. “They’re very popular out there.” The $1.3 million project features a new center that serves as the trailhead for the ski trails, along which the county in the fall of 2011 installed more than 200 LED lights on poles four to five feet tall. The fixtures are aimed at the ground to “minimize light escaping into the night sky,” according to a release from Washington County…

In Kathy Lohmer’s recent email to her constituents, she repeats the old and largely fictional talking points from the 2012 campaign, congratulating herself and the GOP for the “$1.3 billion surplus,” created with accounting tricks and budget “shifts” and not representing a true surplus at all. She claims that “We’ve used extra dollars to completely pay back the school shift…” But there are no “extra dollars” here at all; a $1.1 billion budget deficit still exists for the coming cycle -- $2 billion if you factor inflation in. While better-than-expected revenue collection allowed the state to pay back a portion of what was borrowed from the schools, we still owe the schools $1.1 billion. We’re still a long way from paying it back. A …
