Stillwater Music Teachers Ask Board to Save Elementary School Programs

“If there must be cuts," Music Department Chairman Erik Christiansen said, "it is the music department’s professional staff’s recommendation that the roots of the three programs be left alone, with the trimming occurring at the top.”

It’s hard to imagine, but Stillwater Area High School’s storied music department is on the chopping block if an operating levy is not renewed this November. District 834’s music teachers on Thursday night told the School Board they disagree with the cost center’s suggestion to cut elementary school music programs, if a levy is not renewed — offering up the elimination of the 10-12 grade music programs instead. The Elementary School Cost Center's recommendation to the Board is to cut fifth- and sixth-grade instrumental music programs to save $300,000. That measure would result in the loss of 5 FTE employees and impact more than 1,000 students, Stillwater Area High School Band Director Dennis Lindsay said. The elimination of the high school …

District 834 has taken a page out of current sequester politics. Make proposed cuts seem unbearable while ignoring the real problem, Out of control spending. The district budget is ~$100,000,000 per year! They would lead you to believe it's all about the kids right? Just because 90% of MN schools have a levy doesn't mean we need one. 834 has pulled the wool over voters eye's before so forgive me …   more ›

Stonebridge Elementary Parents Send an Open Letter to the Stillwater Area School Board

Through avenues to share input in the budget cut process, advocates of the Stonebridge paraprofessional model say they have done all they could to save the 40-year-old model, but Stillwater Area School Board members "are not hearing us."

Dear School Board Members: It is important to show the entire Stillwater community that you are willing to take action on behalf of those who elected you. Thursday at 7:15 pm at City Hall is the vote on budget reductions. Through avenues provided for staff, parents and community members to share their thoughts, Stonebridge advocates have voted (#4 out of 85 issues on the Community Conversations page of the district website), contacted the board (third highest amount of communication of any issue), and attended and spoke at meetings. You claim to be listening, but it is evident that you are not hearing us. The Stonebridge paraprofessional model has been used for 40 years with great results. It provides for a lower adult-to-student ratio by …

We moved to Stillwater, to place our 4 children into Stonebridge. I loved the idea of children being self motivated to accomplish their individual goals. I am so disheartened with how Stonebridge has changed from my first encounter with it 14 years ago. We just received a survey from the district discussing how to draw students back into public school. Well we have a great product in Stonebridge…   more ›

Stillwater Area School Board Seeks Input on 2012-2013 Budget Adjustments

The Stillwater Area School District released the first draft of budget adjustment as the School Board seeks community input.

The Stillwater Area School Board is looking for input as they consider $10 million in budget adjustments for the 2012-2013 school year. The District released the first draft of a budget adjustment list consisting of more than 100 items that could potentially be cut from the budget. The list includes changes to transportation and school start and end times; reduction in teaching, administration and support staff; increases in fees for activities; and reductions in programs across the district, just to name a few possibilities. This list was developed from more than 200 budget-cutting ideas submitted by staff and community members. The budget-adjustment recommendation is broken into three tiers of $4 million each—with Tier 1 being the …

I wonder if that money found in the couch cushions would have anything to do with the shell game Mr Queener played in September. You know the one where he hid behind the state statue that says ISD's must have on hand 104% (or whatever the exact number is) of the "proposed" budget, and forced the School Board raise the levy rates with a simple vote. The right thing to do would have been to budget …   more ›

The students can record  a video and project the video on the wall right from the camera. The cameras are valued at more than $60,000. “This is one way our partners are supporting us to meet our needs,” School Board Chair George Dierberger said. The board approved the 2011-2013 contracts for St. Croix Educational Association and Stillwater Principals’ Association, as well as a terms and conditions of employment. Brief: Stillwater School Board Approves Proposed Non-Voter Levy

The Stillwater Area School Board approved the proposed 2011 Property Tax Levy during a special meeting Wednesday evening.

The Stillwater Area School Board approved the proposed 2011 Property Tax Levy  during a special meeting Wednesday evening. This levy is different than the levy on the ballot for this November. The state requires the district to levy 105 percent of the amount needed each year to ensure enough resources to meet the debt service obligations, according to Assistant Superintendent Ray Queener. The total levy being proposed for 2011 is $31,288,959.97. This is a projected increase of 2.3 percent from last year’s levy. Currently, the school district does not have the exact tax rate for properties in 2012 until January. The school board will have estimates at the Board Business Meeting in December.
