Update: Police Crack Down on Motorcycle Noise in Downtown Stillwater

Police have had 43 documented contacts with motorcyclists—resulting in 11 citations, 16 written warnings and 16 verbal warnings—for a variety of offenses ranging from loud exhaust and speeding to no eye protection, Police Chief John Gannaway said.

Since beginning enhanced motorcycle enforcement last month, the Stillwater police department has issued 11 citations and 32 warnings to motorcyclists.

Police have had 43 documented contacts with motorcyclists—resulting in 11 citations, 16 written warnings and 16 verbal warnings—for a variety of offenses ranging from loud exhaust and speeding to no eye protection, Police Chief John Gannaway said.

Officers have also visited establishments where motorcyclists frequent and advised staff to pass on the neighbors’ complaints and enhanced law enforcement efforts.

“We will continue our efforts,” Gannaway said. “I am fully aware that loud motorcycles are a problem. Anyone who has spent a reasonable amount of time downtown can hear/see the issue."

Putting the enhanced enforcement efforts into perspective, the chief said Stillwater has 21 sworn officers, 16 of whom conduct patrol activities.

During the enhanced enforcement, Gannaway said officers generated about 40 more contacts with motorcyclists than they would during routine patrols.
