Army Corps to Begin Lowell Park Levee Project Next Week

"Things will be pretty busy in the Lowell Park area this summer and fall," Stillwater Public Works Director Shawn Sanders said.

The Army Corps of Engineers will get started on the Lowell Park Levee Project next week, according to Stillwater Public Works Director Shawn Sanders.

Monday and Tuesday the Corps will set up the fencing around the construction zone and closing the parking lot for work on the south end of Lowell Park near the Dock Café, Sanders said. Wednesday or Thursday they will start putting in storm sewer pipe and be on their way.

The Corps plans on being done with all their work by the end of August.

Immediately after that, the city will get going on the parking lot reconstruction, the trail and completing the amphitheater, Sanders said.

“Things will be pretty busy in the Lowell Park area this summer and fall,” he said.

Cruising on the Croix has been moved near the Loft, and Summer Tuesdays has also made arrangements to slightly change their location for events in Lowell Park.

The Corps is limited to working on one parking lot at a time, Sanders said, so when they are done with the storm sewer they will move to the next parking lot.

When they are done with that parking lot, it will be opened for use.

“We arranged their construction to try not to disrupt parking downtown,” Sanders said.

As the city begins their work in Lowell Park, the construction will be staged in a similar manner, Sanders said.

The city will start on the south end and do the grading, he said. Once crews are done with the grading, then crews will start on the next lot.

“The plan is to start after Labor Day on our parking lots,” Sanders said. “The Corps has indicated they will be here through August.”

The parking lot construction will go to bid over the next couple of weeks. Sanders said he would like to bring the award before the council in August.
