Foundations about Two-Thirds Poured for St. Croix Crossing

Slightly more progress on the Wisconsin side so far.

Here's how far crews have gotten pouring the foundations for the new St. Croix Crossing bridge.

The diagram shows 25 of 40 round steel casings were filled with concrete and rebar as of the week of Oct. 4, 2013.

Here's how the process is explained at the St. Croix Crossing website:

"Bridge foundations work in the St. Croix River is on track to be complete by early 2014. A major part of this is drilling 40 caissons into the muck and bedrock at the bottom of the river. Caissons are 9-feet diameter steel casings. Crews drill them up to 120 feet below the river surface, then fill them with rebar and concrete to create solid foundations for the new bridge. Completing all 40 of these will be a major project milestone, so join us as we follow the crew's progress each week."
